You have arrived I see just like all the other New Years before you did, smug with promises of bigger and better things; fuller pockets, thinner bodies, happier than ever before humans, the usual. All I have seen is one big-headed New Year after another arriving on January 1st making exciting promises they simply fail to deliver on by December 31st. I think it’s hurting your business. As for this whole New Year Resolution malarkey if the current failure rate keeps up, folk around here will soon be laughing you right out of town.
I can only speak for myself but my 2013, although not exactly awful was not altogether amahzing either - it did put a well needed end to the particularly awful 2012 so I was perhaps a little more expectant of it than I should have been. If we are to be completely honest, there was a lot of unused, untapped potential. 2013 was often very nice like this and this and this and this, (and my full appreciation for these treasures of course) but sadly 2013 was just not Super Fabulous! That being said, I have decided that this year we need to do things a little differently;
For starters I will be saying Yes to the right things and many many more No’s to the all the wrong things. I will of course be super smart and able to recognize the difference.
I will always say yes to champagne. Always. Unless of course I am sleeping or driving, there is obviously no need to be reckless.
I will be eating carbs, mainly on weekends but maybe if I feel a little crazy I will eat carbs in the middle of the week too. I don’t understand the hate, why the hate? Carbs are food too.
I will only, ONLY be accepting Super Fabulous. Nice, Okay and Alright need not apply. This will be applicable to… well basically everything.
I will not do obligation, nor will I be guilted into doing anything.
I will not be doing a lack of self-confidence either. Relax 2014, I will not be doing a bikini in public because I am not doing completely nuts this year either! Also, one should always leave room for a little kindness to others.
I will be doing fun. Yes, excellent, if it sounds fun I am in. I will bake and cook and write and kiss my kiddos far too much. I may also make rocky road and hide it from them – you know, for fun.
I will do all the little things and all the big things that make me feel alive. So all I need you to do 2014, is to stay out of the way, because this year I am going to be doing it my way.
And when I say my way, I really mean God’s way.

In other news, I also plan to make the best lunches in the world ever for Pretty Girl and Handsome. Hilarious. I actually plan to get at least 3 out of the 5 weekly lunches looking like they were dietician approved. Oh my, that is still funny. Let’s just start off really happy and healthy and go from there. This is more than just a recipe for a smoothie; this is me sharing a fabulous lunchbox idea. (High fives self – confidence thing – see above)

For some time now I have followed this blog, 100 days of Real Food and whenever I am looking for some lunchbox inspiration I make a visit. I loved these silicone ice pop moulds with lids which Lisa often uses. They are perfect for sending frozen smoothies or even juice to school. I had to have them but I couldn't find any - like nowhere in the whole country - so I ordered these on Amazon. Although I think I only paid $4 for a set of four, and I had them delivered to my dear aunt who kindly brought them back from the States for me.
As luck would have it, last week I came across some very similar ones in my local plastic store, albeit a little pricier than what I paid, I think they are still affordable. The ones I saw locally were about R 80 for 6. Pretty Girl loves them because by her second break they are just slightly melted but still icy which is great treat in the current heat.
Mango, Melon and Mint Smoothie
What you need
1 ripe mango, peeled and cubed
1 large wedge sweet melon, peeled and cubed
4 – 6 mint leaves, washed
65 ml (¼ cup) fresh squeezed orange juice
What you do
- Place all ingredients together in a blender and process until smooth.
- Fill silicone ice pop moulds, leaving a space at the top to insert the lids.
- Seal and freeze until needed.
- Alternatively, serve immediately over crushed ice.
