I cannot speak for the other bloggers who entered the FreshlyBlogged competition last year, but for me the opportunity to have a recipe featured in Fresh Living Magazine was a very compelling reason for me to throw my name into the hat. The prize package changed substantially from the outset of the competition; but this was one prize which did not and for that I really am grateful because it was the one I had my eye on throughout the long competition.
Just after New Year the January / February 2014 issue of Fresh Living hit the newsstand. I am not too proud to admit that when I saw it had been released I was kid-in-a-candy-store kind of excited. I was however very mature and did not actually jump up and down in my local Pick and Pay when I saw it. When I showed Pretty Girl my face on page 3 she shrieked “WOW Mommy” and then laughed her excited laugh really loudly at the till point and that was just excellent. I only bought one copy but I have read it about a gazillion times. I am not ashamed.
For the recipe spreads, there are two more still to come; I had the pleasure of working with Anke Roux the Food Editor of Fresh Living, who is petite and just generally amazing at what she does. Anke would send me the brief; I would think about it for too long; Anke would ask me where the recipes were; finally somewhere in the final hour I would send her volumes of writing and explanation and a couple of recipes to go with the brief.
For this first issue, Anke asked that I do a Valentine’s inspired set of recipes; he cooks for her, she cooks for him etc. Well in my house she cooks for him every other day so no romantic inspiration to be had there. Instead I did recipes inspired by some of my favourite “chic flicks”. I do love a good sob your heart out chick flick. (Dear Husband is sitting somewhere rolling his eyes). Anyway, I chose three of my favourite movies, I probably could have done ten but the brief only asked for three. Then I sent it all to Anke; she worked her magic and what you see in the magazine is the final result.

Anke kindly allowed Photogirl and I to join her and the talented Dawie Verwey at Flat Art Studios in Woodstock to watch them shoot my recipes. Anke and Dawie are so laidback and easy going, and together with their hardworking interns they made this shoot look like a walk in the park. Anke and Dawie were both so generous in answering our questions, a lot of which were “what is that?” and it was a really fun and inspiring way to spend the day.

While Dawie was checking that the spread looked cohesive, I got my first idea of what it would look like.
I have to just add a small tale about the popcorn you see in the left pic. Anke decided she wanted to do a page with popcorn. There was no porcorn. The intern got to drive to all the way to Merry Pak to buy one popcorn box and popcorn kernels for that shot. Poor girl, we didn't see her for an hour.
